Global Communication: Ann Essance, copyright. "Would you believe that a simple rubber ball is at the base of the sculpted Earth, above? Among much caulking, toothpicks, rocks, semi-precious stones and of course, paint. The form was created over a rubber ball. (The rubber 'collapsed' (caused by the heat generated after the media was applied.) Now, I hear another 'Earth' inside of it...Science is now saying that the Earth is not 'hollow' after all! We shall see...we shall see! The other side holds another secret...keep on looking!" Ann
Review:
"Now, Essance's assemblages and sculptures are constructed out of many varied and bizzare materials, originating form such places as the lumberyard and grocery store." Gallery Review, Best Bets, The Gambit, Times Picayune
Lifeline: Ann Essance, copyright. "Lifeline was done on pressed wood. (Though the texture and patina of the paints are not as visible in this photo as they are in the original, the lines of the Swan Nebullae do appear. An 8mm. cultured pearl nests in the eye. Can you see it? Future Reflection: is made using a base of styrofoam insulation wrapped in layers of tissue wrapping paper. The styrofoam is glued, then sculpted to the white layer, then wrapped a final time, painted with water-color, then sealed with my "secret recipe" of glue and varnish. Illumination: is also done on 1" thick styrofoam insulation board wrapped in aluminum foil. Though not apparent in the photo, the sculpted figure (out of carpenters' putty) sits in front of a round mirror...pondering her place in the scheme of her life."
Thoughts on Art from the Artist...
Ann Essance, copyright
"Most of the work from this collection is made from everyday materials found in the home or in nature. The Home...such an important place, yet how often do we take this place, we call "home" for granted. Having taught Home Economics (now called )Consumer and Family Science, I suppose to "fit in" with modern technology, gave me a wonderful opportunity to see how I could encorporate these sensuous, yet underrated art materials into my expressions of art. And yet, multiple quartz crystals, pearls, and amythists, are among the many "jewels" that sit side by side with these ordinary, everyday
materials. But, isn't that the way of life?
Jesus said in the parable, (to paraphrase:) "See the lillies of the field, they do not toil nor spin" and in another similar text: "The sparrow does not fall to the ground without the Father knowing. Even the very hairs on your head are numbered." (He might have added, had he lived in physical form, longer, "they do get thinner with age..."
What a marvelous teacher of the "simple", he was."
Paintings and Sculptures, above, described below.
Nebullae 2 sub-titled "The Horse of Orion Dances on the Milky Way" Ann Essance, copyright, is done on 3/4" particle board, sculpted with carpenters' putty, painted with ordinary and extra-ordinary paints, then embelished with a hundred+ quartz crystals. Mon Calix was molded from a base of heavy-duty poster board stuffed with cotton batting. It was wrapped in foil and tissue wrapping paper, painted, bound in ribbon and braid and embellished with amythest crystals and sun-dired raisens. Procreation was formed on particle board (which was much more user friendly, organic and textured back then). Archetectural drafting paper encircles the sleeping maiden as she dreams of creating her life. A 2" rutilated quartz crystal warms her pineal gland. Sweet Dreams, Sleeping Lady!"
"Aquarian Age, Ann Essance, copyright was done on 1/4" plywood painted white, then covered with a mosaic of translucent sheets of cobalt colored acrylic ( this material resembled the material the old 78 records seemed to be made of. Caulking, foil stars and moon and of course white paint complete this project. Wonder Child, Ann Essance, copyright, again, 5/8" particle board is the base, along with carpenter's putty. The legs on the large figure are painted on the outer edge with the ascending/descending colors of the races of Humanity. Tree bark, agates and fresh water pearls embellish this cosmic piece. Second Coming, Ann Essance, copyright, is done on layers of insulation board covered with multiple layers of various papers found in the home. I know that the current art marketers insists on museum quality paints, brushes and materials, especially papers. My budget and my experience speak differently to me. This piece sat unfinished for over fifteen years in an attic whose temperatures varied from 24 degrees to over 125 degrees. The piece is as fresh today as it was then. The beard on the figure in this assemblage is from my then Shetland Sheepdog's coat.
"Above: I love abstract art because it frees my soul...after I published the pieces, above, on the right piece, I saw, to the middle right of the painting, "a little old lady climbing her path."..I love it! Could it be me? (I certainly fit that description! I'll be 80 years old this year, 2021! Could it also be you? Could it be "we?". What do you see, on the painting besides it, to the left? It is all up to you....it's what you view that counts.
ABOVE: This painting, done on foil (with overlays of tissue wrapping paper, water color, gold-leaf and sealing medium) was originally named "The Golden Flame" for if you look closely enough, you will also see the form of a chalice. But now, with the new day on the horizon, In 2021, we can also see the golden flame of love in the center, burning brightly.. Any name is as sweet, Dear One, Any name that identifies the one source of Life with dignity, will work! Ann Essance May you be blest by this work. " Reflections of Life Collection, copyright, 2003
Abstract: Fable of Truth 2 (5'x7") Ann Essance, copyright "Now, is The Little White Hen preparing to lay the golden egg, in the upper top-right? Or, is she guarding and guiding the soul in the center, taking its flight?"
"Global Sundance": Ann Essance, copyright. Mixed media sculpture with semi-precious stones: "The surprise on the other side of "Global Communication." The message is:'All things are connected by a common thread'."

CONTOUR DRAWING EXERCISE
Perhaps you will enjoy this "brain freshening exercise", below....I hope so!
Creative Exercise:
1. It is said that many famous artists use this exercise to "limber up." I believe it...more so, because of the laughter it can generate! It is said that Pablo Picasso spent at least 30 minutes a day in his studio, limbering up with this exercise. These are some of the million-dollar drawings we know of today!
2. So much for Picasso...Get a piece of paper and pencil.
3. Select your subject, either a live person, or still object, a landscape, a flower...it does not matter. Personally, I like partnering with someone, when possible, then the laughter compounds itself.
4. Now, for the limbering fun...without looking at your paper, only looking at the subject. You can "cheat, a little, only, when connecting lines...but only a little, or you'll let the left hemisphere (the analitical side of the brain) take over...then you'll be analyzing...where's the fun in that?
5. Once your done...now the fun!
6. A great party "ice-breaker!" Who knows, the next Picasso may be discovered. (Hint: there is a Picasso in all of us!) But, somehow, he got targeted for the million-dollar paintings. Create your own million-dollar paintings. Sign them. Be proud of them. Be grateful for the opportunity to participate in the most wondrous gift on the planet...Creating a higher life, based on Love, Fun and Good Will.

THE ART OF AGING....
(vistaprint image, above)
My statement on the Art of Aging...and my perspective on Life Passages...
In a sense, this statement is as true for me, as it was when I wrote it years ago. Truth is 'truth' no matter its age. In our society we fear aging, yet aging gracefully is an art. We value youth, appearing as teenagers while approaching 90. In Greece and Japan, for example, the older one gets (including wrinkles) the more valued and respected one is for contributing to the life of that society. In our "disposable" society, I believe that we have our shoes on the wrong feet, so to speak. We value behaving more like teenagers than we do growing valuable interior lives, where Wisdom, Grace and Beauty reside. There is something to growing ourselves from the inside-out.
Child development studies have unlocked the importance of various stages of childhood and youth development. Erickson, Piaget, Montessori and others devoted their lives to uncovering the importance of all phases of development. Yet, much like everything "out there" their teachings either "preach to the choir or fall upon deaf ears. And now with the institution of our technological society, we find ourselves in a new paradigm where change is magnified.
There IS Life "after adolescence" and "Cinderella." Not that it is not going to be a challenge to grow into mature, balanced human beings. It is hard work! But, it is something we can and must do. We simply must fess up and do a inquiry within ourselves. Let us face the fact that there is beauty and purpose in the aging process, that besides the lines on our faces, each represents a milestone in increased experience and intelligence, more importantly, patience and perseverance. We'll have fewer wrinkles when we express more kindness and love.
I underscore the fact of the importance of creativity in our lives, not only within the culture of the Arts, but in everyday creative problem solving. Music, Art, Poetry and a multitude of other arts and art related areas, can transport us into higher worlds. Worlds that can temporarily take us out of the seemingly impossible round-about challenges we face in our lives. Though we must return to face these challenges, the Arts can give us a refreshed perspective that assist us in knowing that change is a fact of life. A fact to be welcomed! And nothing, no matter how challenging or baffling is permanent. It is our attitudes that make it appear so, or not. Let us remember these two points: Aging-the natural process of life on Earth and can be experienced in dignity and pleasure by taking personal responsibility for our own health, all phases of it. Humor also helps a lot!
Let us allow each facial line to be a milestone in our aging and self-maturation process. When we go for the gold of inner Wisdom, those lines will not matter so much. It is not necessary to burden ourselves by staying in adolescence, forever. Look at the many who have discovered this and the beauty they bring by being within the process. Let us inhale their wisdom and relish the creative intelligence in their smiles...that "knowing" that "twinkle in each wrinkle." Let us also remember that side by side with life experience is Attitude. Everything has a shadow side. It is up to us to decide which side we choose to stay on. And as we grow old, may we also have the courage to grow up. Rev. Ann Essance
